What 14,000 meals taught us about our neighbors
Our food pantry started with one shelf in 2012. Volunteers share what they’ve learned from a year of serving West Asheville.

Every Tuesday and Saturday morning, a line forms outside the side door of our building. Last year our volunteers handed out more than 14,000 meals’ worth of groceries, and they say they received far more than they gave.
Learning names
“At first it was about getting bags out the door,” says Rosa Jimenez, who coordinates Saturday volunteers. “Now I know most people by name. We pray for each other. Some of them volunteer with us now.”
Whatever you did for one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.

How you can help
We always need volunteers on Saturday mornings, and donations of rice, canned protein and peanut butter. Drop them in the bins in the lobby any Sunday.
